PORTFOLIO UPDATE
HINDESIGHT DIVIDEND UK - PORTFOLIO #1 FEB 2023
OVERVIEW
Last week, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging international support demanding Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and withdraw all its military forces from Ukraine territory. One year on, in this dreadful EUROPEAN war, the UN seems as ineffective now, as it was in preventing the invasion in the first place.
Of more interest to me than the obvious US led ‘support’ for this resolution, with 141 countries voting ‘freely’ for the resolution was to note the abstainers in particular, rather than those countries that voted against.
Countries that voted against;
Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria
Countries that abstained;
Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burundi, Central African Republic, China, Congo, Cuba, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tajikistan, Togo, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zimbabwe
Of course, the against vote is arguably the accepted ‘bad’ guys for the most part, but it is concerning that the abstainers include China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, +15 African countries, (as well as 2 African against)
The continuing geo-political fragmentation potential seems obvious to me and worrying. Our propaganda narrative, led by the US and somewhat reluctant NATO partners clearly puts us on the side of the ‘righteous’, with God and justice on our side, of course, but the potential future of the ‘sides’ is heading badly wrong.
As we progress on through the 21st century, unless nuclear war or climate change put a stop to it, the world is going to look like a very different place and it is Africa’s place that is the focus of this article. Our naïve Woke generation’s focus on Africa typically is centred around the disgrace of slave trade and imperial colonialism, justifying actions such as statues in Bristol rivers etc. Of course, less read, is the slave trade which was largely abolished by the actions of the British Navy and was at least a century before the real “Scramble for Africa” for resource exploitation by the European powers.
The 1912-Colonial map shows the European land grab at its height, pre territory loss by the German state post WWI. On my few travels to Africa in the past, I was always fascinated that the lingua franca in use was still the language of the European power that had ‘claimed’ it. A-level French will still come in handy all over West Africa, where little English is spoken…
