OVERVIEW
After Lenin’s death in 1924, Trotsky appeared to be the natural successor, but the power struggle that followed saw Joseph Stalin assume the emerging Soviet state’s leadership. Despite a constant search for ‘safe’ exile, Stalin’s reach finally caught up with the Trotsky, with the well-known ‘ice-pick to the head’ assassination in Mexico City, sixteen years later in 1940.
Wagner Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s recent demise, just a few months after his ‘mutiny’ was always expected, only the timing was in doubt. Totalitarian states and their leaders methods for maintaining control and power don’t change much and we accept it as the normal state of affairs, as much in the DNA as excess stock speculation in the US, on the ‘new’ thing, currently AI, see NVIDIA-$1.2trillion market cap!

As the conflict continues in Ukraine, it’s depressing to try and explain to my son that young men are still being killed in war.

My explanation often starts with Kennedy’s words in mind that, of course, 99%+ of the inhabitants of our small planet don’t want war and killing but are far too often drawn into it under patriotic/religious guise, land sovereignty and geo-political aims of leaders far from the battlefields led by public opinion that is created by the powerful, distorted propaganda that is shovelled out to the masses. The problem is getting access to the real facts, which if were freely available would surely allow people to make the right decisions.
“So, let us not be blind to our differences--but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved…”
